Texas A&M University
Texas A&M University set Populous a monumental challenge: complete the largest stadium redevelopment in college football history in just 22 months.
Texas A&M University first fielded a football team in 1894. Since then, the Aggies have developed a rich and storied history. Their home, Kyle Field, was built in 1927, and although it had been through several renovations over the years, it needed a major redevelopment to bring it up to date. Populous crafted a bold vision that combined the university’s legacy with a vision for the future of Aggie football. The biggest challenge our team faced? It all had to be completed in just 22 months.
The new Kyle Field is the first stadium to be designed in response to demographic and market research. By engaging more than 24,000 fans, the candid input received directly shaped the design and outcome of the premium amenities, allowing the team to sell all premium products within two weeks — more than $225 million in value.
Home advantage is everything. To ramp up the noise levels and fuel the intimidation factor, the playing field was lowered, the seating moved closer to the action and the four corners of the stadium were filled in to increase capacity and stop the sound of the fans escaping. Canopies were added, amplifying the roar even more, adding to the most daunting environment in all of collegiate athletics.
It’s the biggest redevelopment in college football history and it was delivered on time, meaning the Aggies could play in their beloved home without interruption. Kyle Field now serves as a living monument to the unique culture and history of Texas A&M.
There were all kinds of obstacles - cost, schedule, weather, and the proverbial naysayers - but we refused to waver from our goal of making this the finest collegiate football facility.
To amplify the noise level and intimidation factor on game days, the field was lowered and seating moved closer to the action. Canopies were added to create a more comfortable, intimate and amplified fan experience. The stadium’s four corners are now filled in with fans as well as new activation towers. These exclusive destinations create immersive branded experiences and add to the most intimidating environment in all of collegiate athletics.
The entire redevelopment, from start to finish, was completed in 22 months without affecting Texas A&M’s football schedule, allowing the team to continue to play in their beloved home without interruption. The new Kyle Field now serves as a living monument to the culture and storied history that is Texas A&M.
