Estadio Algarve was one of the most prestigious facilities constructed for the European Championships in Portugal in 2004.
The stadium is part of a new inter-municipal development – Parques das Cidades – in which the cities of Faro and Loule are involved. The project received great support from the mayors of both cities and was very popular with the local community because of the boost provided to the local economy.
The final stadium design encompasses all the features required for a championship venue. Translucent roofing fabric provides bright conditions for players and spectators alike, while flexible seating arrangements mean that the stadium can be transformed from football to concert venue in hours. Even the space between stands can be altered to create any club facilities required in the future. The stadium was also designed as the centre of a new leisure development to be used by the people that live in the surrounding areas.
