To understand Citi Field, you first have to understand the Mets. Founded to replace the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants after both teams departed the city, the Mets played their home games at Shea Stadium in Queens. It was a multipurpose venue that didn’t necessarily serve baseball well, with fans further from the field than at other major league ballparks.
Populous’ design pays homage to the old home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Ebbets Field, which was demolished in 1960. The facade is a mixture of brick, limestone, granite and cast stone, with a main entry, the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, that honors the Dodgers legend.
Most importantly, contoured seating brings spectators much closer to the action than they’d ever been at Shea Stadium, with nearly half the seats in the lower concourse, finally giving the Mets and their fans the home that they deserve.
