This 65,000-seat stadium affectionately named Estadia da Luz or Stadium of Light, is the most prestigious of the ten new stadia developments built in Portugal for the Euro 2004 Championship. The €130M centrepiece for the UEFA competition was built on a site adjoining the old stadium, and since its completion in 2003, has led the way in the regeneration of the Luz district.
The scheme incorporates a football stadium with integral museum, health and fitness club, administration offices and themed restaurant areas. The new club mega store is accommodated in an adjacent linked development called the pavilion, it forms one anchor store together with an Adidas mega store and is all part of a major retail mall development.
Co-located within pavilion building are the 2500 and 3500 seat sports halls for roller hockey, volley ball, basketball, indoor football and handball amongst other sports. In addition there is a three pool swimming hall containing a national standard 8 lane competition pool and teaching pool.
