FLYPASS Concept Makes Final Round of Airport Innovation Competition
The FLYPASS concept reimagines the traveling experience for passengers during global events.
Populous designer Benjamin Naudet and Senior Associate Matthew Breest joined Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s Andrea Garza and Anthony Garcia to present their FLYPASS concept at the Young Professionals Innovation Competition during the 2020 ACC/AAAE Airport Planning, Design and Construction Symposium on February 19 in Reno, Nev.
FLYPASS is the temporary off-site screening solution for improving large-scale, post-event experiences while reducing airport congestion after major events. When traveling, passengers spend hours stalling in traffic and waiting in lines at the airport, all before reaching the departure gate. The FLYPASS concept reduces the time passengers would spend waiting by designing opportunities for passengers to clear through security at an off-site location before even reaching the airport, ultimately improving their overall experience.
In 2019, Atlanta’s airport saw over 100,000 passengers on “Exodus Monday” after hosting the Super Bowl (compared to a typical Monday of 60-65,000 passengers). As a leader in large-scale, marquee event design and management, Populous recognizes the complex logistics required to execute events of global magnitude. Everything from mapping out a master plan for the host city to focusing on each individual fan experience before, during and after the event. Populous used this expertise to design a concept that quickly responds to the massive flocks of passengers during these large events.
The use of off-site access points at events offer a smoother overall experience that bypasses stress-inducing security lines and creates a positive final impression before visitors leave the event destination. Additionally, these controlled FLYPASS spaces provide an opportunity for events and cities to create an integrated travel experience from hotel to plane, creating better opportunities for branding and sponsorships and a unified event experience until the passengers depart to head home.
Sponsored in part by the ACC Members Foundation, the competition is part of the larger efforts of the ACC Young Professionals Forum, which engages young professionals in ACC member firms and enhance their professional careers. Targeted for industry professionals who are aged 35 or younger, the Young Professionals Forum is intended to provide networking, mentoring, education and career growth opportunities.
This was the second ACC Young Professionals Innovation competition for Populous’ aviation team. The practice took first place for its CurbShare terminal arrival design in 2016.
